Communiversity Highlights
- The Communiversity of South Africa is a unique social and educational community-based enterprise—a kind of
“university on wheels”—that offers its relevant College and Work Preparation programme directly within a community
thereby eliminating building, housing and transport costs. - Started in 2012, the Communiversity provides a “bridge to somewhere” for both school leavers and matriculants via an
innovative, “pre-professional,” educational and self-development programme. - The Communiversity has proven to be a highly beneficial, time-efficient, low-cost model with strong outcomes that can
successfully serve as a vital preparation for matriculants and school leavers to enter college, the workplace, or to start a
business. (SEE “RESULTS”) - It began, as most everything does, with a single thought: “What would be the most powerful way to offer deserving unemployed and unemployable young people in South Africa a second chance in life?” In less than five months, the Communiversity prepares its students both practically for further education and jobs but also cognitively and emotionally to step into a future where they can once again believe in their dreams and goals.
- The Communiversity is currently operating at two Cape Town campuses: At the Vrygrond Community Centre and at the Westlake Community Centre offering a “pre-professional” programme for financially disadvantaged youth. The Communiversity is funded by several foundations, both national and international, and by a number of generous individuals. Students pay a fee of R300. These fees are returned upon graduation.
The Communiversity program is presented in three phases:
Phase One: The Pre-Professional Program offers qualified high school leavers and matriculants a 5-month long, 12-course program to introduce them to relevant career fields and further English and Maths instruction. It honors and supports self-worth and self-sufficiency while giving each student real freedom of choice for all possibilities in life.
Phase Two: Each Communiversity Phase One graduate is entitled to a seven month in-depth individualized and group mentoring experience to foster the best placement possible into further education or employment.
Phase Three: Supporting and tracking the success of our family of graduates is an important feature of the Communiversity commitment. Each Communiversity graduate is welcomed to enjoy a continuous connection to the Communiversity. This ensures that all graduates receive real support and encouragement to continue on the path to fulfill their career and other personal lifetime goals despite hardships.
